Mr. Godwin Elewana has been sentenced to death by hanging by the Cross River State High Court on Wednesday for the killing of a 22-year old boy, Douglas Ojugbo on March 10, 2015.
Elewana who has been in Prison custody since 2016 had shot and killed the deceased on suspicion that he was having an affair with his daughter Mercy.
The defendant was said to have shot the late Douglas after which he informed the Police that he had shot a robber who attacked his home.The Police, in turn, informed the Calabar Urban Development Authority who then buried the body of the deceased, who was preparing to write his Joint Admission and Matriculation Board exams, without identifying him.
The presiding judge based his judgment on the confessional statements of the accused, hospital reports and other documents brought before the court.
Mother of the deceased Mrs. Maria Ojugbo thanked God for allowing justice to be served, stating that the bible says those who kill by the sword will die by the sword.She added that the defendant had no reason to kill her son in that manner.
