A 21-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital with a rare condition that makes her sweat blood from her face and the palms of her hands.
The condition left Italian doctors puzzled after the patient who was not named showed up with the symptoms without showing any sign of skin lesions.
Doctors said there was no visible cause for the bleeding, which sometimes happen while she slept or is involved in physical activity. But the bleeding was more intense when she was stressed out, reports the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
Doctors say the patient has suffered the unusual symptoms for three years and each feat last between one and five minutes
The condition has left the woman depressed and does not socialize.
The condition is known as hematohidrosis and is believed to affect only one in 10 million people.People who suffer from this condition may experience weakness and dehydration occasioned from blood loss.
Some medical literature references Leonardo Da Vinci’s description of a soldier who sweated blood before battle and some also say Jesus Christ experienced hematohidrosis while praying in the garden of Gethsemane before he was crucified.
Much is not known about the cause of the condition but it is believed to be as a result of extreme stress or fear. The blood vessel that surrounds the sweat glands become narrow while under stress and causes bleeding, says Indian Journal of Dermatology.
There is no cure for hematohidrosis.
