Malawian Police Arrest 140 People Over Anti-Vampire Attacks

Police authorities in Malawi said they have arrested 140 suspected members of a vigilante group who have targeted people suspected to be vampires after about nine people have been killed.

The mob attacks began around September in four districts in southern Malawi belief in witchcraft is high.

This week, the attacks spread to the country’s second-largest city, Blantyre where they allegedly burnt one person and stoned another person to death.

The police are said to be doing its best to ensure the attacks do not spread to other areas of the country.

The President of Malawi Peter Mutharika has visited parts of the country affected by the anti-vampirism attacks.

The United Nations has pulled its staff from two areas of Southern Malawi, just as the US embassy has blacklisted several areas of Southern Malawi as danger zones for its citizens and staff.
