The Kano State Police Command says a couple and a nurse have been arrested for buying a five-year-old boy.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of the Command DSP Magaji Majiya, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen, as the suspects were paraded yesterday in Kano.
The PPRO said the suspects were arrested on October 10 following a tip-off from Hajiya Fatima, who offered to sell her child to plot for the arrest of the suspects.
While speaking, he said the police received information from Hajiya Fatima that someone intended to buy her baby. So she was told to tell them she had agreed to sell the boy. The suspects bought the child at the price of N15,000 and gave a part payment of N13,000.
The spokesman said that Itopam Pius who is one of the suspects, who claimed to be a nurse at ECWA Eye Hospital, Kano, was picked up while trying to confiscate the baby from his mother.
The nurse intended to purchase the baby for a couple, identified as Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bob-Manuel, who were in Kano from Rivers State to adopt a baby because they have been married for 12-years without a child.
DSP Majiyasa said that the nurse has confessed to having committed the offense, while the couple denied being part of the plot. The said that the nurse was deceiving them that they came to Kano orphanage home with all their documents to legitimately adopt a child.
The investigation is still ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is completed.
