The Benue State House of Assembly on Friday passed a bill banning the use of tyre and other leather related materials used in roasting meat for consumption across the State in view of the hazardous effect to meat consumers.
The Nation reports, that the State Assembly directed that going forward butchers and slaughterers are to use firewood instead of a tyre and synthetic materials in the roasting of meat.
Mr. Terkimbi Ikyange, the Speaker of the Assembly announced the house resolutions after a debate on a substantive motion moved by the Katsina Ala East representative, Mr. Ianna Jato.
The House also directed that the appropriate ministries (Ministry of Health and Human Services and that of Agriculture and Natural Resources )are to effectively regulate the activities of butchers and abattoirs in the state capital and other parts of the State to prevent health and environmental hazards.
Earlier on, Mr. Jato had informed the House about the dangers associated with the use of tyre and other synthetic materials, natural rubber, fabric, wire, carbon black and other chemical components as unhealthy for consumption by humans.
He said the United States Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry has stated that tyre contains heavy metals such as Zinc, Lead and Copper are Carcinogenic when consumed over a period of time.
All those who contributed to the debate expressed concerned over the use of tyre to process meat and stressed the need to halt the trend.
All the members of the House who contributed to the bill expressed concerns over the health hazard it posed to consumers and stressed the need to put a stop to the practice.
