Wayne Rooney, the former England striker has apologized for driving under the influence of alcohol.He apologized for what he called his unforgivable lack of judgment as the court passed judgment on him.He was banned from driving for two years and also given 100 hours community service yesterday.
The 31-year-old striker was pulled over by police while driving a 29-year-old girl Laura Simpson home from a night out of partying, at 2 am in her Volkswagen Beetle in Wilmslow, Cheshire, on September 1. Rooney was pulled over because Miss Simpson’s vehicle had a faulty brake light.
The footballer was almost three times the legal limit of 35mg as his breath reading was 104mg per 100ml of blood.He was given a two-year driving ban and was told to pay 85 pounds prosecution cost along with a victim surcharge for the same amount.
In an issued statement after the plea, Rooney apologized for his ‘unforgivable lack of judgment’, adding that it was completely wrong.The footballer said he has pleaded for forgiveness from his family, his manager, and chairman also Everton FC. He came in wearing his wedding band but his wife Coleen was not present.His lawyer said the Everton player had let down his family very badly.
The player accepts the sentence of the court and hopes that he can make some amends through his community service.After the court hearing, he tweeted his apology to his 16.3 million followers.
Michael Rainford, Rooney’s lawyer, said the footballer may likely be fined two weeks’ salary which will be about 300,000 pounds with his club Everton FC.Adding that Rooney was very co-operative with the police both at the roadside when he was stopped and also at the police station.
Rooney’s legal representatives asked District Judge John Temperley to consider waving a community order because of ongoing charitable work, but the judge declined as he was not convinced that giving a large fine will have the same effect as a community service.Adding that the offense was a serious one to which the footballer admits.
The footballer was arrested when his wife who announced last month she was pregnant with their fourth child was away on holiday with their three kids.
Miss Simpson who is a single mother and a sales manager was the star in her car at the time of the arrest said she would have slept with the footballer if he hadn’t been arrested by police and said the arrest had ‘spoiled the night’.
Rooney’s wife is said to be pissed with her husband and has gone to live with her parents since the news broke.She also recently asked the footballer to seek compassionate leave from his club so they could work on their marriage.
